European banks are still burdened by bad debt, despite economic gains

Despite Europe’s economic recovery, the balance sheets of the Continent’s banks remain shaky relative to those of U.S. banks, says Boston Partners’ Portfolio Manager Christopher K. Hart, CFA. Chris and his colleagues at Boston Partners manage John Hancock Disciplined Value International Fund. The team doesn’t expect to see attractive opportunities in European banks broadly until the institutions deal with the bad debt on their balance sheets.
